Apple iOS Web Traffic Overtakes OS X for First Time

Thanks to a blockbuster fourth quarter that saw consumers snap up more than 52 million Apple iPhones and iPads, U.S. Web traffic on iOS devices has eclipsed traffic on Mac OS X computers, according to new stats from Chitika.

The mobile ad network found that OS X has seen its Internet market share drop by 25 percent since a high point in September. This month marks the first time that iOS surpassed OS X, with iOS nabbing 8.15 percent of traffic compared to OS X's 7.96 percent, Chitika said.

The trend isn't all that surprising if you look at Apple's fourth quarter numbers. Apple released the long-awaited iPhone 4S in October, which helped Cupertino sell 37.04 million iPhones and 15.43 million iPads during the quarter, compared to 5.2 million Macs.

Why the shift? Chitika suggests that the Apple faithful might be opting for the iPhone and iPad over a MacBook because they offer similar services at a cheaper price point.

"Perhaps Apple's habit of launching cutting edge gadgets year after year is driving consumers to newer products. Combining this aspect with the similar functionality of iOS devices and a lower price point, it may be that consumers are choosing to go mobile, instead of purchasing more expensive Apple computers," Chitika speculated. "Alternatively, the shift towards an on-the-go lifestyle could be driving mobile device purchases by the consumer, and thereby driving the corresponding increasing in mobile web usage."

The number of Apple mobile users could grow in the coming weeks; recent rumors suggest that Cupertino might unveil its next-gen iPad in the first week of March.

While Apple captured 43 percent of the U.S. smartphone market last quarter, it has a ways to go on the PC front. Recent data from Canalys actually named Apple as the world's number-one PC maker, but the firm included tablets in those numbers, which of course significantly boosted its market share.

Excluding tablets like the iPad, Gartner data from January said HP was the number-one PC maker during the fourth quarter with 14.7 million PCs sold. With 5.2 million Macs sold during the same time period, Apple has to top Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Asus in worldwide sales to attain PC dominance, Gartner said.

In other MacBook news, MacRumors reports that the white MacBook is officially a thing of the past. Last July, Apple confirmed that it would discontinue its iconic white MacBook and make the $999 11-inch Macbook Air its entry-level laptop. The white MacBook stuck around for education customers, however, until now. Resellers have been notified that the laptop is now classified as "End of Life."

Apple is first technology company to join Fair Labor Association

Apple is first technology company to join Fair Labor Association

By Sam Oliver

Published: 02:52 PM EST (11:52 AM PST)

The Fair Labor Association announced on Friday that Apple is now a participating member, making it the first technology company to earn that distinction.

By joining the FLA, Apple agrees to have the association independently assess facilities in its supply chain and report detailed findings on the association's website. Apple also agrees to uphold the FLA Workplace Code of Conduct throughout its supply chains, and commit to the association's Principles of Fair Labor and Responsible Sourcing.

"We found that Apple takes supplier responsibility seriously and we look forward to their participation in the Fair Labor Association," Auret van Heerden, FLA's President and CEO, said in a press release. "We welcome Apple's commitment to greater transparency and independent oversight, and we hope its participation will set a new standard for the electronics industry."

The announcement comes the same day that Apple released its annual supplier responsibility report. The 2012 edition is Apple's most extensive yet, with 229 total audits conducted, and found that underage labor was significantly reduced last year among the company's suppliers, with no evidence of intentional underage labor.

"We're extremely proud to be the first technology company admitted to the FLA," said Jeff Williams, Apple's senior vice president of Operations. "Last year we performed more than 200 audits at our supplier's facilities around the world. With the benefit of the FLA's experience and expertise, we will continue to drive improvements for workers and provide even greater transparency into our supply chain."

Motorola RAZR is the first Android Phone to use a microSIM card

When I was expecting the Motorola RAZR to arrive today , I had a question in my mind. Does this phone use a microSIM card. The Motorola DROID RAZR for Verizon uses the smaller SIM card but there was no mention about it in the Europe / Asia product pages. To my surprise when I opened the box earlier today, I noticed that the RAZR had a flap which covered the microSIM card slot and the microSD memory card slot.

For a device which is just 7.1 mm thin except near the camera, using this smaller version of the SIM card seems like a good choice. The phone had a sticker on top indicating the various buttons and ports. Also the getting started guide indicates the location of the SIM card slot and the right way to get a microSIM inside the device. The Motorola RAZR might be the first Android phone to sport such a SIM card slot which was first adopted by Apple in the iPad v1 and in subsequent devices such as iPhone 4 , iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Nokia launched the N9 which uses the same type of  SIMcard. Nokia has also launched it’s Windows Phones – Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 which follow the same standard.

Here is the location of the flap on the Motorola Razr which exposes the underlying slots.

Airtel is offering these type of SIM cards and so does Tata Docomo. Aircel , Vodafone and BSNL also offer a microSIM card to customers on request. Recently when I had trouble getting the iPhone 4S working in India , I had a lot of trouble getting one of these. None of the operators were interested in offering a factory cut microSIM, but offered to chop them down instead.

With 3 big names in the mobile handset space adopting the standard , more and more new handsets will use this format of SIM card forcing operators to support them in a better way. Have you used a microSIM ? If yes in which device ?
