So here we are, day three of my look into what the biggest players in the smartphone world will, or possibly should do in 2012.
We’ve already covered Google’s Android and Apple’s iPhone, with both set for exciting and challenging times ahead of them, but what about the noisy neighbor. What about Microsoft?

Microsoft Windows Phone
2011 was a big year for Microsoft. With the launch of Windows Phone 7 and the subsequent deal with Nokia allowing the Finnish firm to become a major WP7 partner, Microsoft saw its new mobile OS take a leap forward both in availability and usability. Windows Phone 7.5, Mango, brought with it a selection of features which many believed should have been present from day one, and coupled with the new hardware from Nokia the early days of 2012 have already started well.

The issue facing Microsoft is a very similar one to that of Google, and that is attracting developers to a platform which is currently lacking in grad-A titles. Take Xbox LIVE as a prime example.
The big advantage that Microsoft has over its rivals is the deep integration with the Xbox gaming platform that Xbox LIVE should bring. Being able to tie mobile gaming into the home gaming space could potentially open up a whole market for Windows Phone, with gamers flocking to the platform in order to get the most out of the games they play on their Xbox 360s. Throw in some top-class multiplayer gaming through Xbox LIVE on a smartphone, and things could get really interesting.
Apple itself has recognized the importance of building a community around gaming on the go, with Game Center aiming to do what Xbox LIVE did for the Xbox. As is so often the case with Apple however, things seem to have gone very quiet on that front, with Game Center becoming stagnant and never really hitting the heights we had all hoped. In Xbox LIVE, Microsoft has the opportunity to take things one step further, and actually make gaming on a smartphone a real experience that hardcore gamers want to get into.
I would expect 2012 to be the year that Microsoft really takes the bull by the horns with Windows Phone, with WP8 possibly on the agenda during the first half of the year. With the existing hardware specifications beginning to get a little long in the tooth – Microsoft tells hardware partners what specifications WP7 handsets need to meet – I fully expect a new reference design to be announced alongside Windows Phone 8, giving the whole platform a nudge forward in the specification arms race that Android is currently winning.
Many would argue that Windows Phone does not need the super-fast, dual-core chips that Android phones are sporting, but if games are to be the platform’s biggest weapon; then developers are going to need more power to work with. Hence, new hardware.

I’ve got high hopes for Windows Phone this year, but if Microsoft does not hit all the right notes during the next twelve months, I would argue that we can all but write the company off for this generation.
Just as we did with the previous one.

Motorola RAZR is the first Android Phone to use a microSIM card

When I was expecting the Motorola RAZR to arrive today , I had a question in my mind. Does this phone use a microSIM card. The Motorola DROID RAZR for Verizon uses the smaller SIM card but there was no mention about it in the Europe / Asia product pages. To my surprise when I opened the box earlier today, I noticed that the RAZR had a flap which covered the microSIM card slot and the microSD memory card slot.

For a device which is just 7.1 mm thin except near the camera, using this smaller version of the SIM card seems like a good choice. The phone had a sticker on top indicating the various buttons and ports. Also the getting started guide indicates the location of the SIM card slot and the right way to get a microSIM inside the device. The Motorola RAZR might be the first Android phone to sport such a SIM card slot which was first adopted by Apple in the iPad v1 and in subsequent devices such as iPhone 4 , iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Nokia launched the N9 which uses the same type of SIMcard. Nokia has also launched it’s Windows Phones – Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 which follow the same standard.
Here is the location of the flap on the Motorola Razr which exposes the underlying slots.

Airtel is offering these type of SIM cards and so does Tata Docomo. Aircel , Vodafone and BSNL also offer a microSIM card to customers on request. Recently when I had trouble getting the iPhone 4S working in India , I had a lot of trouble getting one of these. None of the operators were interested in offering a factory cut microSIM, but offered to chop them down instead.
With 3 big names in the mobile handset space adopting the standard , more and more new handsets will use this format of SIM card forcing operators to support them in a better way. Have you used a microSIM ? If yes in which device ?

Nokia India just sent us an invite for a launch event on Nov 14th. The invite talks about Amazing New Experiences. We are betting this is the India launch of the Windows Phone devices. Nokia announced the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 devices at Nokia World 2011 last month where the company promised to bring these devices to India before the end of the year. The image quality is fine in the daylight but not that good in the night or in the room with the low lighting even if you use the flash. Here are some samples for you (Click to enlarge).

The UI of the phone is like Facebook, with the text box to enter new Facebook status at the top, time and date in the center and the shortcut bar at the bottom. The phone calls were ok without any drop calls. It reminds you to invite the person to Facebook using their number after each call, if they are not in Facebook.
The Contacts don’t get synced to Facebook but if the contact number matches your friend’s number you can write on the wall directly from the contact. You can also download the PC Suite to sync the contacts from your PC (Microsoft Contacts).
There are text and multimedia messaging options. The keypad is easy to type on. You can input numbers or symbols by pressing Alt once or switch to number / symbol mode by pressing Alt twice. There is also scheduled messaging option and you can also send messages to multiple contacts.

The phone has Bluetooth connectivity including A2DP for listening to music over Bluetooth headset or making calls. You can get access to Bluetooth menu just by pressing Alt+B key combinations. This phone supports only 2G and has EDGE connectivity that makes it 2.5G. There is no Wi-Fi which is disappointing.
This phone has good build quality , has decent looks, battery life that lasts for 1-2 days with average use like few hours of music and radio, some calls and messages with always on data for Facebook updates. However Wi-Fi or 3G is missing, at least Wi-Fi could have been a great advantage as the Facebook experience is a little slow compared to native apps on smartphones. You get 1 year free access to Facebook which is definitely great. The Vodafone Blue 555 comes at an MRP of Rs.4950 and we would recommend it to any one addicted to FaceBook and is on a low budget.
