Google reportedly working on wireless home entertainment system

Google reportedly working on wireless home entertainment system

By Mikey Campbell

Published: 07:57 PM EST (04:57 PM PST)

Google's Android unit is rumored to be developing a wireless home entertainment system that is capable of streaming music throughout the home, and if launched would be the first consumer electronics product designed and marketed under the Google brand.

Citing sources familiar with the project, The Wall Street Journal reports that the internet search giant's Android mobile platform division has led a "multi-year effort" to develop the system, which is rumored to launch sometime this year.

Thus far, Google has concentrated on developing the software that powers partner Android device makers' hardware, like Samsung's Galaxy line of phones or Google TV products branded by Sony and Logitech.

The proposed wireless system could mark the start of a new era for the company where, much like Apple, it will develop an ecosystem of Google-designed and branded software and hardware.

According to the sources, the system will stream music from Google's online music store to Google-branded speakers or other WiFi-connected devices and can be controlled using a smartphone or tablet, akin to Google TV. However, the device or devices are meant to be a system solution and not just a set-box or integrated TV component made by an outside vendor.

The product described smacks of Apple's AirPlay wireless system, which connects iOS devices and computers running iTunes to Apple TVs, third-party stereos and other enabled devices to stream music and video. Non-AirPlay capable products can also stream audio via output from the company's AirPort Express base station.

While Apple relies on iOS, iTunes and other proprietary software and third-party hardware to power AirPlay, Google will reportedly use a version of its Android platform to do the same.

Some app developers have bemoaned the Android operating system's fragmentation as many OEMs make tweaks to the software, and was at one point such an issue that Google had to implement stricter "non-fragmentation clauses" to remedy the situation.

The problem of fragmentation is essentially a non-factor for companies that are in control of both the software and hardware facets of product creation. Google could possibly be looking for that level of consistency with the rumored product line.

With its new system, Google hopes to undercut competitors like Sonos, a wireless entertainment system pioneer that focuses solely on streaming music.

Sonos cofounder Tom Cullen notes that from a financial perspective, the idea of relying only on music streaming services would be a misstep for Google.

"I'd be stunned if they actually thought it was worth it, because it's peanuts for them," Cullen said of possible revenue from the venture. Cullen's company managed $200 million in sales last year, compared to Google's $38 billion.

However, the rumored product could indeed support more than just basic audio by leveraging the Android-based Google TV to stream video as well.

Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility may also yield helpful patents such as "Televation," which allows users to rebroadcast live video content to other devices in the home.

It is unclear how Google intends to market the system, and no estimated was given as to a possible launch date.

Motorola puts blame on Google for lag on Android updates

Motorola puts blame on Google for lag on Android updates

By Josh Ong

Published: 03:00 AM EST (12:00 AM PST)

A Motorola Mobility executive has said Google's practice of creating a flagship model for each software update for its Android mobile operating system is the reason that vendors have a hard time keeping their devices up to date.

Christy Wyatt, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's Enterprise Business Unit, pointed a finger at her employer's future parent company in an interview with PC Mag earlier this week. According to her, optimizing Android to specific hardware profiles is a difficult task that handset makers must deal with after Google releases the software into the wild.

"When Google does a release of the software ... they do a version of the software for whatever phone they just shipped," she said. "The rest of the ecosystem doesn't see it until you see it. Hardware is by far the long pole in the tent, with multiple chipsets and multiple radio bands for multiple countries. It's a big machine to churn."

After support is finished for a handset's hardware, Motorola's custom software must then be added before the devices are re-certified by carriers, she said. Working with carriers also makes it difficult for Motorola to provide specific projections on when the updates for its devices will arrive.

"I would have to know that every single operator I have is going to want to upgrade every single product, and sometimes they'll want to control the timing ... it's just not easy to make that blanket statement," she told the publication.

Wyatt did boast that Motorola has beat out its competitors on multiple occasions. "More than once we've come out as the fastest to get to market with an upgrade," she said.

Several Android vendors, including Motorola, spoke up late last year to explain why the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update would take months to arrive on their own devices. At the time, Motorola also attributed the delay to Google's decision to work with one device partner for a "Google Experience Device."

Though Motorola may be hoping to get an earlier look at Android software once Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of it is completed, Google has said it will run Motorola as a separate business and Android will "remain open."

In fact, Google has sent mixed messages about what exactly it intends to do with Motorola. A blog post from CEO Larry Page shortly after the deal was announced implied that the acquisition was mainly about shoring up Google's intellectual property portfolio to protect it from legal attacks by Apple and Microsoft. Chairman Google Schmidt, however, has emphasized the move was about more than just patents, as Motorola "has some amazing products." Meanwhile, Motorola competitors have said that Google reassured them that it would not become a "hardware manufacturer" by acquiring Motorola.

Samsung could stand the most to lose if Google begins to favor Motorola, as it has grown to become the world's second-largest smartphone largely by piggybacking off the Android platform. The South Korean handset maker has reportedly moved to strengthen its Bada smartphone platform and signed a patent licensing deal with Microsoft because it was unsure of the future of its relationship with Google.

USPTO rejects 17 out of the 21 claims of the ’476 patent between Oracle and Google

We all know about the patent war between Apple and all the Android manufacturers but there is another patent war going on between Oracle and Google from a long time. The United States Patents and Trademark office has given Google a great Christmas present in a final rejection of 17 of the 21 claims of the ’476 patent, including all seven of the patent’s independent claims.

All of the other claims were sent for reexamination except for claim 14 which was the only claim which was in the favor of Oracle in the litigation. As we look at the whole picture right now Oracle does not look in a good state but they have till February 20 2012 for reconsideration or appeal for the final rejection.

Google restarts roll out of Android 4.0.2 update for Galaxy Nexus [Download]

A few weeks back the Galaxy Nexus users had reported about the device getting  4.0.2 update to their devices, but later we came to know that Google pulled off this update due to internal issues and now people from various countries using the Galaxy Nexus have reported that Android update 4.0.2 is rolling out for the GSM version.

With the 4.0.2 update it solves many bugs present in Android 4.0.1, other than that the face recognition has been improved, special effects when using front facing camera has also been improved, there has also been a visual improvement to the lockscreen. DivX support which is was present earlier has been removed but Google has promised that they will bring back the support in a later update, many other features have been enhanced and bugs have been solved.

With 4.0.3 already rolled out for the Nexus S, I wonder what is keeping Google back from updating the same version to the Galaxy Nexus, the 4.0.2 update was meant to be a month old update which has been rolled out now and they will be taking some more time to roll out the 4.0.3 update, or will they directly go to 4.0.4 without updating it to 4.0.3 and this update is just to make the users happy? Well this is possible.

If you can’t wait for the official update to come OTA on your device then you can download the factory image of the update from below and flash it using your recovery.

Google Releases 'Android Design' Style Guide

What makes something an "Ice Cream Sandwich" device? What does it mean to embody the spirit of Android? To help answer these questions, Google on Thursday unveiled Android Design, a guide for how to create the best Android apps and interfaces.

Android Design is "the place to learn about principles, building blocks, and patterns for creating world-class Android user interfaces," Christian Robertson, head of the Android visual design group, said in a blog post. "Whether you're a UI professional or a developer playing that role, these docs show you how to make good design decisions, big and small."

Robertson said Google is "committed to helping you design amazing apps that people love," and promised more in-depth content on Android Design, as well as design-related blog posts and Google+ Hangouts, in the coming months.

At this point, the Web site has basic tutorials on Android style, patterns, and building blocks.

Google said the latest version of its Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich, focused on three overarching goals for core apps and the system at large: enchant me; simplify my life; and make me amazing.

During an appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt touched on the need for an aesthetically pleasing user interface. The search giant wants to attract "people with great taste," Schmidt said. The new model for Android is "cleaner, pristine, and more spare," he said, doing "enough of what you need" without cluttering the space.

That's a description you might normally hear coming from Apple, a company that prides itself on a simple, intuitive design across all its devices. Google, meanwhile, has a customizable UI that could look very different from one device to the next. There are also many different versions of Android floating around—Ice Cream Sandwich is on just 0.6 percent of devices at this point—which has prompted concerns about Android fragmentation. At CES, however, Schmidt said he was not convinced Android was fragmented, arguing instead that there was a "differentiation" between the versions.

Google to come out with a fix for the Galaxy Nexus Volume bug

We have been hearing about the Galaxy Nexus volume bug from the the day it was launched in U.K. It has been covered by every blog and news portal out there, and the users have been reporting and are unhappy about it. There have also been reports that this bug has something to do with 2G and happens only when 2G is kept on. Many people also thought that this was a hardware bug and the device has to be replaced, but now Google has finally acknowledged and responded to this volume bug.

Google has said that they have been working on a “Fix” for Galaxy Nexus and will be pushing this fix on the devices pretty soon. I am sure all the Galaxy Nexus Owners out there must be very relieved by now knowing that this is not a hardware issue but a minor software bug which can be solved by a system update. What remains to be seen is that when Google will be ready with the update and will it be coming with a Android 4.1 update or will it be a normal downloadable package, etc which is unconfirmed. So stay tuned, we will be reporting more on this as soon as we get more information.

Google to operate Motorola “At arm’s length”

The search gian, implored that the other Android manufacturers had nothing to be vexed about, when Motorola was taken over by Google. Not allowing it any particular favors or privileges, they would operate Motorola as a wholly discrete unit. Ingeminating this claim, during a Wednesday evening interview at AsiaD, Google mobile chief Andy Rubin said ‘that the companydidn’t buy Motorola for its hardware, but for its patents.

“I’m focused on delighting a lot of consumers, but there are other folks focused on putting me out of business,” said Rubin, indicating that Motorola’s registered portfolio will be influential arsenal in the intellectual property wars that torment the mobile industry these days.

Rubin reiterated that a Google-owned Motorola would operate “at arm’s length” from its Android unit, as far as it goes for the hardware business.

“I don’t think you should consider Google’s acquisition of Motorola as Google entering the hardware business,” Rubin said.“This is going to be an arm’s length thing… Motorola isn’t going to get any special treatment.”

Google to announce Honeycomb in February?

Google recently launched the Android 2.3, which is the latest version of Android OS. A few days ago, Andy Rubin showed off a Motorola tablet, and the tablet features an upcoming version of Android known as Honeycomb. Our friends our at AndroidandMe are reporting that Google will launch the Honeycomb officially in February, and the actual name of this version is Android 2.4, not 3.0. May be Google is looking forward to announce Honeycomb during the Mobile World Congress.

Also rumors are on the street that Motorola will launch the Everest tablet on February 6th. Both rumors make sense, because for the launch of Motorola tablet, the announcement of Honeycomb is necessary. As we know that Google launched the Android 2.3 with Samsung, may be they are planning to launch 2.4 with Motorola. Honeycomb features a totally changed user interface, and the UI is actually designed for tablets but not only for tablets, the OS will also run on phones.
